AgeTech Sessions:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into tools designed to support older adults, offering potential benefits for safety, health monitoring, and social connectivity. Applications such as smart home systems, wearable devices, and automated reminders can enhance independence and provide valuable support to caregivers and providers. However, these innovations also raise important ethical considerations that must be addressed to ensure responsible use.

This session will examine key ethical issues related to the design and deployment of AI for older adults, including privacy, data security, autonomy, and equity. Attention will be given to challenges surrounding informed consent, especially for individuals with cognitive impairment, and the risk of over-reliance on automated systems. The session will also address concerns about algorithmic bias, fairness, and disparities in access to AI-enabled technologies.

Panelists will discuss strategies for developing AI systems that are transparent, trustworthy, and aligned with the values and preferences of older adults. Emphasis will be placed on approaches that promote dignity, support decision-making, and ensure equitable access. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the ethical landscape and practical considerations for advancing AI in aging contexts.

The development and dissemination of technologies to support older adults requires substantial investment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustained effort. Identifying effective funding mechanisms and building strong partnerships are critical to ensuring that promising innovations move from concept to real-world impact.

This session will explore the innovation pipeline from the perspectives of both funders and fundees, highlighting diverse funding opportunities including federal, foundation, and industry-supported programs. Panelists will share insights into strategies for securing funding, aligning stakeholder priorities, and navigating the complexities of cross-sector collaboration.

The session will also address common challenges in advancing AgeTech solutions, such as mismatched timelines, resource constraints, and barriers to scaling and implementation. Speakers will present approaches for overcoming these challenges, with a focus on dissemination, implementation, and long-term sustainability. Attendees will gain practical guidance on building partnerships that support rigorous evaluation while accelerating innovation.

By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to identify funding opportunities, foster productive collaborations, and advance technologies that enhance the health, independence, and quality of life of older adults.

Smart home technologies are increasingly recognized as a promising approach to supporting aging in place. Systems that integrate sensors, voice interfaces, and automated controls can assist with daily activities, enhance safety, and provide ongoing monitoring of health and behavior. These technologies also offer opportunities to support caregivers and promote social connection among older adults.

Despite this potential, successful implementation requires careful attention to usability, accessibility, and real-world context. This session will examine how smart home technologies can be designed and deployed to meet the diverse needs of older adults, with a focus on collaboration across industry, academia, healthcare, community organizations, and residents.

Panelists will discuss strategies for engaging all users in the design process, addressing barriers to adoption, and ensuring equitable access. The session will also highlight lessons learned from implementation efforts, including challenges related to trust, privacy, and integration into everyday routines.
Attendees will gain insight into how cross-sector partnerships can support the development of scalable, sustainable smart home solutions that enhance independence, safety, and quality of life for older adults.

Robotic technologies have the potential to play an important role in supporting older adults’ independence, health, and well-being. Applications range from socially assistive robots that promote engagement to service robots that assist with daily tasks such as medication management and mobility support. However, translating these technologies into communities and homes presents a range of challenges.

This session will bring together panelists from academia, industry, and community-based organizations to share experiences in developing, evaluating, and implementing robotic solutions for older adults. Each speaker will provide an overview of their work in this area, and reflect on key lessons learned, including both successes and challenges.

Topics will include user-centered design, user engagement, barriers to adoption, and strategies for building trust and acceptance among older adults and caregivers. Panelists will also discuss considerations related to cost, scalability, and long-term sustainability.

The session will provide opportunities for attendees to engage with panelists and explore how cross-sector collaboration can advance the development and deployment of robotic technologies that are accessible, acceptable, and responsive to the needs of diverse aging populations.
